Unprecedented medical achievement in the NICU
Agial’s NICU received a baby (born at week 25) which is a very young age with very low chances of living. The resident specialist went to check on the baby and surprised everyone that she still had a chance of living, after the certainty of her inevitable death. Indeed it was a successful recovery and the baby responded very well. The baby was then transferred to the NICU and put in an artificial respiratory device, and after 3 days the baby showed a significant improvement. The baby kept on receiving parenteral nutrition with small amounts of breast milk which was received successfully. So, the amount of breast milk was increased gradually and the parenteral nutrition was decreased until completely stopped. The baby received the breast milk through small feeding tube till she reached the weight of 1.5 kg. The baby was checked for any complications on the retina or her nervous system, and was allowed to leave the NICU after staying for 52 days. This is considered an unusual medical achievement in EGYPT’s NICUs. Dr Bahaa Hammad- consultant and head of the NICU- praised on the performance of all the unit’s staff of doctors and nurses and that their cooperation, team work and commitment to standards of quality control and infection control guidelines helped in achieving this medical success. Special thank to Dr Mohamed Magdy- neonatal care specialist- who received the baby and showed complete medical professionalism from the first moment.
